What's funny is that in every book/story I've written, there's been a dance in all but one. (The last one had capybaras and there was really no opportunity with the space they were taking up.) The dances are where my two leads discover something about one another, where decisions are made that might seem inconsequential, but reverberate through the plot.

So, the idea of looking at the story as a whole as a dance partner? I get it. I think I've been doing that unconsciously for a while

sometimes it feels less like story is an entity that's a dance partner and more like it's an entity that swarms into my brain and sets up shop there until it's done with me 🤣 (which, to be clear, I'm totally fine with haha)

Every last one of my mss have come to me. In fact, if I try to imagine or rush the story; the characters shut up and stop talking to/engaging with me and I have to stop what I'm doing,(brainstorming, writing), until they decide I've been sufficiently chastised, and now know my proper place. (Glorified secretary. They do the telling, I do the typing.)

I like this idea of story being a dance partner. It makes it immediately more intimate, in connection with me, rather than this other thing, separated by a notebook and/or a computer. A dance partner simply connects with you, even if you don't know all the steps. You just begin moving, communicating with rhythm, melody and harmony. As a musician, this idea is extremely helpful.

I do love the idea of story/creativity as an active partner, though dance partner specifically doesn't speak to me personally. I love to watch dancing if I'm in the right mood but have no interest in dancing myself, even casually with friends or a partner. But it's very easy for me to see it as a partner in other ways!
